What happened
We opened the September 11 SOUN $6.50 put on September 1 for $0.10 in premium. Three days in, SOUN pulled back to $6.67 — down from our entry near $7.00 but still above the $6.50 strike with a week to go. No real danger.
But when a stock dips toward your strike, implied volatility on nearby puts rises. The $6.50 put that we'd sold for $0.10 was now priced at $0.11 to close — barely any decay in three days. And the September 25 $6.50 put was paying $0.30. That's a $0.19 gross difference for 14 additional days.
Why roll early
This is the opposite of a defensive roll. We weren't rolling because we were in trouble — we were rolling because the math improved. Our general target for the challenge is roughly $0.05 per week in premium per contract. Rolling out 14 days for $0.19 gross is nearly double that pace.
Most of the rolls earlier in this challenge were defensive — SOUN was below or near our strike and we were buying time. This one is different. The position was fine. We rolled because elevated IV made the new position worth more than the time value remaining in the old one. That's a worthwhile distinction — rolling isn't just for damage control.

The position is now the SOUN $6.50 put expiring September 25, with $28.87 in gross premium collected on this leg. If SOUN recovers back toward $7 and beyond, we may look to close early and capture most of that premium ahead of expiration. If it stays rangebound, we let theta do its work. And if it dips again and premiums inflate further, we'll evaluate another roll on its merits at that time.
There's no automatic rule for when to roll early. The question is always: is the new position a better use of capital than the old one? Today the answer was clearly yes. $0.19 for 14 days beats $0 for 7 days by a wide margin — and we're still in a name and at a strike we're comfortable with.
